Choosing the right size

A dog should stand, turn and lie flat inside. Measure his height at the shoulder and length nose to tail, then add a few centimetres. Use a divider in a full-size dog crate while a puppy grows, rather than buying twice.

Crates that suit a living room

Slatted wood reads as furniture rather than kennel. A side table with built-in crate gives you a usable surface, and the crate furniture side table is the heavier option. Always compare internal dimensions, since frames take up more room than they look.

Playpens for puppies

A playpen with a door gives a puppy room to move away from his toilet area, which a crate cannot. The playpen with window panels suits dogs that settle better when they can see out, and a foldable pen travels easily.

Travel and the car

Rigid beats soft in a vehicle. An aluminium car crate keeps its shape under braking. Pair it with a belt or seat protection from our car seats and travel collection for shorter journeys.

Settling a dog into a crate

Feed meals inside with the door open, cover part of the roof so it feels enclosed, and never use it as punishment. Put his own bed from our dog beds and mattresses inside so the crate smells of him from day one.

Dog crates and playpens: your questions answered

What size crate does my dog need?

He should stand without ducking, turn around freely and lie flat on his side. Buy for his adult size and use a divider while he grows, since too much space lets a puppy use one end as a toilet. A standard dog crate fits most breeds; check internal measurements, not external.

Is crate training cruel?

Not when the crate is introduced as a den and never used as punishment. Dogs naturally seek enclosed spaces to sleep. Feed meals inside with the door open, build up time gradually, and put a familiar bed from our dog beds range in it. A dog who chooses to go in on his own has understood it.

Crate or playpen for a puppy?

A playpen for time awake and unsupervised, a crate for sleeping. A puppy cannot hold on for long, so a playpen with a door lets him move away from his own mess, which a crate does not. Many owners use both in the first months.

Can I use a crate in the car?

Only a rigid one. Fabric and wire crates deform under braking, so an aluminium car crate is the safer choice. Secure it so it cannot slide, and see our car seats and travel range for belts and boot protection.

How do I stop my dog whining in the crate?

Go back a step rather than waiting it out. Shorten the time, stay in the room, and make sure he has emptied himself and had exercise first. Cover part of the crate so it feels like a den, and leave a long-lasting chew from toys and enrichment so the crate predicts something good.
