How many trays and what size
One tray per cat plus one spare, in separate rooms. The tray should measure roughly one and a half times your cat's body length, so larger breeds need a large covered box rather than a standard tray they have to fold themselves into.
Self-cleaning and automatic
An automatic tray rakes waste into a sealed drawer soon after use, which controls smell far better than a tray waiting for the evening scoop. The Neakasa M1 and the Litterluxe Pro both suit confident adult cats. Introduce one with the motor off at first.
Trays hidden as furniture
A litter cabinet with side entry turns the tray into a sideboard and keeps scattered litter inside, while a litter box house does the same job where floor space is tight. Leave the door open for the first days so your cat learns the way in.
Odour control that works
Frequency beats fragrance. Scoop daily and wash with unscented soap, since perfumed cleaners drive cats away from the tray. A stainless steel tray will not hold odour in scratches like plastic, and an air purifier for the litter box deals with the rest.
Mats, scoops and refills
A large litter mat at the exit catches most of what paws carry into the hall, and a scoop with holder keeps the daily job to a few seconds. Keep refills such as waste bags in stock so an automatic tray is never out of use.
