Strollers for older dogs

An arthritic dog does not need a shorter walk, she needs a lift for the second half of it. Let her walk while she is comfortable and load her in before she stiffens, and the day out costs her nothing the following morning. Look for a low step-in, a flat floor she can stretch out on and a brake you can reach with your foot. A foldable pet stroller suits most homes, and a double stroller carries two small dogs without either of them being squashed.

Wheels, suspension and terrain

Match the wheels to your route rather than to the photograph. Small hard wheels are pavement-only; gravel, roots and forest tracks need larger air-filled or rubber-tyred wheels and rear suspension, or every bump goes into the dog. A swivel front wheel turns tightly indoors and a lockable one tracks straight on a rutted path. A large-dog stroller usually gets both.

Getting the size right

The weight limit is a structural rating for the frame, not a fitting guide, and that catches people out. Measure your dog lying down and standing, then compare those numbers with the internal cabin dimensions on the listing. A short, stocky dog needs more room than a taller, lighter one. The PawHut 2-in-1 pushchair publishes its internal size, and it is worth checking the folded size against your car boot as well.

Rain covers and ventilation

A rain cover earns its keep in a Nordic autumn, and mesh underneath earns it again in July, because a zipped cabin in full sun heats up quickly. A stroller with a rain cover gives you both layers. Open the mesh when it is warm, park in shade, and clip the internal tether to a harness so a startled pet cannot bolt through an open panel.

Prams that become trailers

If you cycle, buy once. The PawHut 2-in-1 bike trailer and pram swaps between a bike hitch and a pram handle, and the stroller with a car mount secures in the car for the drive there. The full range of converting frames sits in bike trailers.

Dog strollers and pet prams: your questions answered

Is a stroller a good idea for an older dog?

Yes, and it is usually the difference between an old dog coming along and an old dog staying home. Let her walk as far as she comfortably can, then load her in for the rest, so she keeps the smells and the company without the joint pain the next morning. Look for a low entry, a wide flat floor and wheels big enough for the ground you cover, which is what a stroller built for large dogs gives you. Check with your vet first if she is recovering from surgery.

What size stroller does my dog need?

Go by measurements, not by the weight limit. Measure her lying down from chest to the base of the tail, and standing from the floor to the top of the shoulder, then compare both with the internal dimensions of the cabin rather than the outside of the stroller. She should be able to lie stretched out and sit up without pressing her head into the roof. The weight rating is a structural figure for the frame, so leave headroom rather than buying one rated at exactly her weight. The PawHut 2-in-1 pushchair lists its internal size on the product page.

What wheels do I need for gravel and forest paths?

Large wheels, air-filled or properly rubber-tyred, plus suspension on the rear axle and a front wheel you can lock straight. Small hard wheels stall on gravel and pass every root and kerb straight through to the dog. A large-dog stroller usually has the bigger wheels, and for genuinely rough tracks a bike trailer that converts to a pram has the strongest running gear of anything in this range.

Will my cat actually sit still in a stroller?

Most cats will, but not on the first attempt. Leave the stroller open indoors for a week or two with a blanket and treats inside so it becomes furniture rather than an event, then push her around the flat, then out to the garden, then down the street. Keep the mesh closed, clip the internal tether to a harness rather than a collar, and stop while she is still calm. A covered model such as the stroller with a rain cover helps, because a cat who can see out but cannot be seen settles far faster. A carrier she already knows placed inside can make the first outings easier still.

Can a pet stroller be used as a bike trailer?

Only if it was designed to be, and several here were. A converting model swaps between a bike hitch and a pram handle, and it is built heavier than a pram-only frame because it has to cope with road speed. The PawHut 2-in-1 bike trailer and pram and the heavier SEPNINE 2-in-1 for large dogs both do it. Never fit a bike hitch to an ordinary pram, and always use the safety flag and the tether when you are on the road.
